Take Action

If there are actions already organized, we encourage people to join them! But if there is not one planned near you, consider organizing a #CeasefireNow action in your community.

Here are some tips for organizing a local action:

    • Put pressure on your Member of Parliament and the Canadian government to push for an immediate ceasefire and an end to the blockade of Gaza. We want as many people as possible to be voicing their support for a #CeasefireNow.

    • Educate people in our community about the need for a just and lasting peace in Israel-Palestine and to address the root cause of the violence: Israel’s decades-long occupation of Palestinian territory. Learning about the issue from speakers and other attendees will help build more peoples’ confidence to take action.

    • Connect a network of organizers and supporters who can work together to build a long-term movement for a Free Palestine in your community.

  • Look at the list of signatories and reach out to their local branches to see if they can participate and promote the action.

    • Contact local unions, labour councils, faith groups about the event, even if they haven’t yet signed on to the ceasefirenow.ca statement.

    • Use our customizable posters and social media shareables and add in the date and location of your event.

    • Post about your event on social media using the hashtags #CeasefireNow and #cdnpoli.

    • Reach out to people by email, text and phone in your networks to ask them to come to the event and promote the event. One-on-one invitations and conversations work best.

    • Organize a group of people to put up posters in the community promoting your event.

    • Encourage people to bring homemade signs and print the posters from our website to hand out. If possible, organize a sign-making party before the event.

    • Use the leaflet on our website to handout to people passing by to explain what your event is about and invite them to take action with you.

    • Bring a megaphone for chants and a speaker to play music.

    • Find someone to volunteer to MC the event, lead chants and read out the demands.

    • Task a volunteer to take pictures and/or videos of the event.

    • Task one volunteer to talk with the police if they show up to the event. Remember, you have the right to hold gatherings in public spaces.

    • Task one volunteer to speak with the media if they come to the event. Prepare your talking points in advance.

    • Don’t make the event too long. Aim to have people leave feeling energized to do more.

    • Prepare a sign-up sheet to collect contact information of attendees.

    • Post the pictures and videos on social media. Make sure to tag your local Member of Parliament and use the hashtags #CeasefireNow and #cdnpoli.

    • Follow up with people who came to the rally, include photos, a link to the email tool, and information about next steps for taking action in your community until our demand for a ceasefire is met.
